It’s the ultimate question isn’t it?  After all, if anybody possessed a conclusive answer we’d all be winning!  But are mathematical roulette systems and strategies a valuable method of making some extra cash?  Let’s find out.

The Mathematical Layout of the Roulette Wheel

European roulette is easier to win than its American counterpart (statistically speaking anyway).  So let’s initially assess the layout of the wheel.  It’s said the numbers are arranged precisely to ensure mathematical randomness and irregularity.  A single-zero roulette wheel is arranged as thus:

0-32-15-19-4-21-2-25-17-34-6-27-13-36-11-30-8-23-10-5-24-16-33-1-20-14-31-9-22-18-29-7-28-12-35-3-26

While an American double-zero roulette wheel is arranged like this:

0-28-9-26-30-11-7-20-32-17-5-22-34-15-3-24-36-13-1-00-27-10-25-29-12-8-19-31-18-6-21-33-16-4-23-35-14-2

Mathematical Roulette Systems & Strategies on a European & American Table.

Although the numbers are arranged differently on each wheel the patterns do bear some similarities.  The red/black numbers on both European and American wheels alternate, although removing the zero and double zero on the American version would provide successive red/black numbers; 2 and 28 (either side of the zero, 0), and 1 and 27 (either side of the double zero, 00).  Likewise the low numbers (1 – 18) and high numbers (19 – 36) are also arranged to alternate where permissible. However, this rule is disrupted on a European wheel where the 5 and 10 are located next to each other.  On an American wheel the violation of this rule is a regular manifestation, as is the distribution of odd/even numbers.

Which is better: European Roulette or American Roulette?

There are two other symmetries that are worth a mention.  If you refer to my European roulette wheel above you’ll notice that all the low red numbers and high black numbers are on one side of the zero.  Likewise you’ll notice the high red numbers and low black numbers are located on the other side.      

Interestingly, the arrangement: 29-7-28-12-35-3-26-0-32 does not contain any number that is located in the middle dozen.  In other words numbers 13 – 24.  Even with these anomalies in the number distribution, I conclude that European roulette is a more random game.  However, I admit that this doesn’t necessarily assist the player in deciding if Mathematical Roulette Systems & Strategies are viable.

Does a More Random Game of Roulette Mean More Money?

Does it matter how random a game of roulette is?  The Spanish roulette player Gonzalo Garcia-Pelayo crushed both Vegas and Spanish casinos. He (and his family with whom he played) was reported to have made thousands in their endeavour.  How did they win?  They were victorious by detecting flaws in the roulette wheels.  A ‘faulty’ wheel does not reflect on the viability of mathematical roulette systems and strategies.  In fact there’s no mathematical consideration that has been injected into the betting approach.  Gonzalo and his team merely monitored and noted each roulette wheel and evaluated the results.  After detecting a bias they were able to exploit it.

This approach is prudent, profitable and lucrative.  However, casinos are more likely nowadays to regularly monitor each spin of their wheels and change any defective ones if a flaw is detected.

Mathematical Roulette Systems & Strategies are important but do not account for the finest methods of playing!

Expected Value: Weighted Average of How Much you Can Win or Lose

Most roulette enthusiasts understand that the expected value in roulette is as follows (American wheel):

  • 38 numbers which means the probability of the ball landing in any of these is 1/38.
  • 18 of these pockets are black so the probability of a black number occurring is 18/38.
  • 20 pockets are either red or green, thus the probability that black does not occur is 20/38

These basic mathematical calculations indicate how the probability of winning is prejudiced in the casino’s favour. 

That might be an obvious statement but it’s worth remembering when we’re trying to determine if mathematical roulette systems and strategies are an effective tool in defeating the casino.

So, is Roulette Mathematically Perfect?

Albert Einstein is rumoured to have said:

“No one can win at roulette unless he steals money from the table while the croupier isn’t looking.”

While players, scientists, roulette enthusiasts and anybody with an interest in this tantalising game will employ their own techniques and methods to win (or at least try to win!) I’m uncertain if mathematical roulette systems and strategies are any more effective than rudimentary ones, or systems that have been devised with other structures and concepts in mind.

Einstein is alleged to have visited Las Vegas and after having observed the roulette tables for a short time is believed to have proclaimed his reference.  According to a controversial reporter, Ted Thackrey, Jr a colourful gambler called Nick the Greek stopped by at a casino, purchased some chips at the roulette table and placed them on red.  He won and let them ride for two more spins which also returned reds.  He allegedly grinned at the scientist and walked off.

Are There Any Mathematical Perfect Roulette Systems on the Market?

Because roulette is a game that relies on true randomness, each time the wheel is spun the outcome is utterly unconnected to the previous spin so mathematical roulette systems and strategies are probably no more effective than their non-mathematical counterparts.
